GH5 Display button intermittent fault…shutting the camera down

Categories: GH5 Exclusive 1 Comment

I had this intermittent fault just after I updated my camera but thought nothing of it and put it down to finger problems. Today my friend Stewart phoned me to explain what happened to him yesterday and we discovered it was the same problem, camera shuts down by itself.

Problem…As you press the DISPLAY button it eventually reaches a total blank screen, then although it does not happen every time, the camera shuts down.

Work around…Switch the camera off and on again.

As usual time and time again the wrong people get the FW early who do not pick up on these problems.

Meanwhile you can avoid this happening by locking off the DISPLAY button as shown by Erik Naso below…

Please report to me on this blog if you also have the same problem with your GH5 and we can get Panasonic to act quickly to remedy this. It would also be useful to know where you are from i.e. Scotland, England, USA etc.

Here is a video of the fault…

GH5 Release new FW specifications in advance

Categories: GH5 camera No Comments

1. Compatibility with “LUMIX Tether” PC software
This new firmware enables GH5 tethered shooting via USB, using “LUMIX Tether” PC software. Users can control the camera by connecting it to a PC via USB. It lets you view the image on a large PC screen while shooting, which is helpful in commercial photoshoots of portraits, products and so on, where continuous confirmation is required. You can use [6K PHOTO] [4K PHOTO] and start and stop video recording with the tethered shooting. It is also possible to choose the folder to save the image files in the PC.

2.Improved auto focus performance
-Auto focus performance for subjects with low contrast in photo shooting is improved.
-Tracking auto focus performance in video recording is improved.
-The customized AF area can be continuously displayed in [Multi AF] and [Custom Multi AF] during live-view.
-The AF area in [Multi AF] can be moved to the other edge (side, top or bottom) when it reaches one edge.
-The start point of AF lock can be set on the live view screen in advance in [AF Tracking].
-The AF area can be moved while the shutter button is half-pressed or while recording in [Burst Mode], [6K PHOTO] and [4K PHOTO].

-4:2:2,10-bit ALL-Intra video recording mode is added to 4K/FHD video recording.
•Use of SD Memory Card with Video Speed Class 60 or higher is recommended for 4K ALL-Intra video recording. Operation is confirmed with Panasonic SD Memory Card with Video Speed Class 90.

5. 4K HDR video recording
-[HLG] (Hybrid Log Gamma) is added to [Photo Style]. HDR (High Dynamic Range) is a mode to reproduce both bright part and dark part in an image, making it look just as human eyes see. The camera records video with a designated gamma curve compatible with ITU-R BT.2100, and you can now choose Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) in [Photo Style].
-A low-bit-rate recording mode 4K HEVC for HLG was added. This enables playback on AV equipment compatible with the HEVC compression format, such as Panasonic 4K HDR TVs.

6. Enhancement of the Anamorphic video recording mode
-High-Resolution Anamorphic mode, which enables video recording in 18-mega effective pixels, is added. *Recorded in HEVC

New High-Resolution Anamorphic Mode

for this mode is equivalent to the number of pixels produced by 6K (approx. 6,000 (horizontal)k3,000 (vertical)) images (approx. 18 megapixels).

-[Anamorphic Desqueeze Display] was added, which lets you view an enlarged image in Cinescope size while recording with 2.0x and 1.33x Anamorphic lens.
-[Video Guide Line] is added to display the image in a variety of aspects, such as Cinescope, 16:9 and 1:1 while recording video. This can be used not only in Anamorphic mode but also in other video recording mode.

7. Enhancement of Body I.S. (Image Stabilizer)
-[I.S. Lock(video)] is added. This powerfully compensates for handshake when the viewing angle is fixed.
-A new handshake correction mode is added, which provides optimum correction when using 2.0x and 1.33x Anamorphic lens.

8. Correction of white balance setting
-When the K (Kelvin) value was changed after adjusting the color temperature with 2-axis white balance compensation, the setting was reset. This bug has been fixed.

GH5 to lose one of its most reliable SDXC cards from Lexar

Categories: 4K filming 1 Comment

Micron Technology today announced that it is discontinuing its Lexar® retail removable media storage business. The decision was made as part of the company’s ongoing efforts to focus on its increasing opportunities in higher value markets and channels.

The Lexar portfolio includes memory cards, USB flash drives, readers, and storage drives for retail and OEM customers.

Micron is exploring opportunities to sell all or part of the Lexar business.

The company will continue to provide support to existing customers through this transition period. Customers should contact their Lexar sales representative to discuss specific requirements.

I’d like to thank our team members and partners for their contributions to the Lexar business. As difficult as this decision is, the company is making this adjustment in its business to ensure it continues to be well-positioned for the future.

Editor : Sadly we have come to rely on Lexar 1000x as the leading manufacturer for use with our GH5s in 4K 50p and was the first card of choice. Long before the new v2 software appears for the 400Mbps upgrade to the GH5 we will lose the ability to purchase the only card on the market suitable to sustain its speeds the Lexar 2000x SDXC speed 10 U3 card. I know most GH5 users have come to rely on their Lexar media and will be a great loss.

New firmware 1.1 for the GH5 arrives

Categories: GH5 camera 1 Comment

I have just installed the new FW1.1 into my GH5 and it works a treat, it takes less than 60 seconds to perform. Your battery needs to be full or it will not operate.

FW v1.1 features the following…

FHD 4:2:2 10-bit video recording has been added. It can be selected in either FHD [MP4 (LPCM)] or [MOV] recording format.

4:2:2 10-bit video recording has been added to Anamorphic (4:3) mode.
There was a problem in which the exposure adjustment did not operate properly during live view standby when the [SS/Gain Operation] display was set to [ANGLE/ISO] while [Variable Frame Rate] was selected for Creative Video mode, this has been fixed.
A problem in [V-LogL] of Photo Style mode where afterimages appeared when recording video under high ISO sensitivity settings has been fixed.

GH5 micro review

Categories: GH5 camera No Comments

My GH5’s arrived just over two week ago and I soon got to work exploring the new features. I spent a lot of time filming the local bird life mostly at 180fps as you can see above.

I still do not understand why the cameras came with 4K 422 10bit 25p and not Full HD 422 10bit as this was main the reason for upgrading my two GH4s. OK, Panasonic have told us the 10bit HD is coming just around NAB which is just over a week away.

I have only used the two SD card slots recently to add JPEGs in slot one and RAW in slot two, photographic job.

My new SDXC card of choice is the Lexar 64GB UHS-II technology (U3) for a read transfer speed up to 1000x (150MB/s).

Autofocus…What about the poor autofocus everyone is on about on You Tube, I rarely use autofocus but I did find out that autofocus is disabled during 180fps. I found the tracking very useful and accurate especially during my low light footage as seen in the video (ladies coming out of a pub, walking towards the camera).

Jitter update : I also found that the Olympus and older Lumix lenses did not seem to produce the jitter the same as the newer Lumix 12-60mm f3.5-5.6 lens did, so I stopped using that lens.

Battery life… screen open…dual image stabiliser…One slot only…2 hours 13mins before the red indicator, squeeze a further 5mins after the red flashing battery indicator giving a total battery life in a brand new DMW-BLF19e battery pack. Total = 2h 20m.

Filming in 4K 50p, screen open filming onto 2 SDXC cards. Total rec. time = 1h 45m.

The lenses used were as follows…

Olympus Pro lenses…7-14 f2.8, 12-40mm f2.8, 40-150 f2.8 plus the 1.4x  Olympus converter.

Olympus Digital ED lenses…12mm f2, 60mm f2.8 macro.

Lumix…25mm f1.4 Leica and the 12-35mm f2.8

Focus Transition timings…

Sets the moving speed of focus

SH = 12 frames

H = 1 sec

M = 2s.14f

L = 4s.37f

SL = 14s.21f

Focus Transition Wait…

Sets the wait time before the start of Focus Transition for 5secs or 10secs or OFF.

This feature is very useful to avoid a small bump in the picture as you press the LCD.

Focus Transition Rec…

Starts Focus Transition when recording starts at either..

[POS 1]/[POS 2]/[POS 3]/[OFF]

Why Panasonic don’t refer to timings like I have translated above beats me or even better why can’t you dial in your own transition times.

GH5 Image Stabilisation problems with certain models

Categories: GH5 camera 2 Comments

The Lumix GH5 came today with inbuilt problems…The Image Stabilisation in video mode is not working properly. The picture jumps up and down as the camera is moved in hand held mode.

The GH5 works fine without Image Stabilisation which is the mode I prefer to use. The XLR unit is very quiet indeed and goes up to 96kHz 24bit via the menu.

MAKING A POINT… The first shot is hand held with IS turned on as I say in the VO while the second shot is on a tripod with IS turned off also stated in the VO.

Note : The jittery Image Stabilisation only happens in Video Mode.

You should see the hand in a box if you are in 5 Axis mode.

Panasonic have been informed and I am not the only person to have seen this problem. I am sure a firmware update will appear ASAP. I would agree with the statement “Its the price you pay for an early adopter” but this is a 5th generation camera and a major feature was the IS so you would think you would get it right !

NOTE : This may only be a problem with a small batch of GH5’s, I am still investigating.

The plot thickens…Just had a phone call from Bill who got his GH5 yesterday and tried the older 12-35 f2.8 lens with no stabilisation problems.

Note 2. My friend Stewart has the same problem.

NOTE : This only happens in Video Mode the Image Stabilisation is fine in Photo mode.
