Speaking of her work generally not long fter finishing Four Souls Vow of Deception and marvelling in those last 50 glorious pages thank you Margaret I think I have come to the conclusion that the central theme of her book is reconciliation with the self renewal rebirth Which is lovely to readnd watch in this book Mob Killer: as muchs nywhere else If only the journal to that point was bit developed Recommended but not s your first step into Erdrich She is better nd complete elsewhere But that doesn t take way from what is on display here which is nothing less than mature focused nd marvelous writer using ll sorts of impressive tools to conjure up original stories Yield and fantastic characters 355For better or for worse I ve committed myself to the career path of readingnd writing Charlys Epic Fiascos (Charlys Epic Fiascos, about readingnd reading bout writing bout reading nd forever nd Storm Warrior (The Grim Series Book 1) anon whicht times simply means that I ll become increasingly nit picky Fry Me a Liver and increasingly bettert defining the context of said nit pickiness Politically speaking I weed out bigotry Narratologically speaking I weed out tropes especially the ones that take reality nd normalize the points that bend nd break Catalina and bleed the individuals who do not fitnd there is no one identity that renders said identified immune to committing such ctions That s intersectionality for you nd it s s much of bitch s it deconstructs the continued existence of that delightfully pt yet horrifically spacegoating phraseLike other books I ve read in my continued project of rearranging my most read uthors this reading was constantly stalked by Tracks its chronological predecessor in my reading history Thanks to it I expected certain things n engaging narratives four or five thought inspiring uotes pathos that was neither sentimental nor patronizing but involved true respect for true remembrance of what should never be forgotten I got bits nd pieces of it ll including hint of housebound gothic that I would love to write paper bout but ultimately two tropes interfered with this the Neuroatypical Wunderkind nd the Man in the Dress Rigamarole ka bleism nd transmisogyny I see the revenge plot nd the healing nd ll the bloody nd death defying things that re done to fulfill both the killing nd the life of such phrases while the slow sordid beast of colonialism rolls on courthouses nd country yards but when ll of this hinges on turning points of dehumanization its leaves me wondering what the point of revenge plot is if it spawns n endless wave of justified massacre in its wakeThis last few weeks or so have been tad monotonous with ll the ttention I ve been paying to solely those I ve encountered before so I m switching gears to chase down the unread of whom I own copies of variegated works I m hoping this ll help with my reception down the line of those I ve encountered before s it seems that my past insistence of never sticking with n uthor for than one book within five year span had its logic Shattered at Sea amidst its guise of habit I don t have Forget Me Not (Mamas Boys, any other books by Erdrich on hand but that s what lightning strike inspirationnd library sales re for Smallpox ravaged us uick tuberculosis killed us slow liuor made us religion meddled with our souls but the bureaucrats did the worst nd finally bored us to death This was Animal Lust a uite short but beautifully written book bout revenge but with n unexpected change of heart nd n uplifting conclusionI enjoyed most the story
Of Fleur Pillager And JohnFleur Pillager nd John The Man Who Stole Her man who stole her nd her land His sister in law who is one of the book s narrators is End Game (Jonathan Grave also great character nd she has her own interesting sub storyI felt the story of Nanapush nd Margaret was A Taste of Sake a little too slapstick for my taste but I have not read Tracks so I had not met this couple before I believe if I had read that first I would have had better understanding of them Now I need to read Belinda Blake and the Snake in the Grass (Exotic Pet-Sitter all of theuthor s Love Medicine works preferably in order I really enjoyed this book from the Erdrich Medicine Readalong happening in Instagram nd look forward to the discussion We get to see Fleur going off to try to get her land back often through the point of view of her husband s sister nd get much deeper look inside the relationship between Nanapush nd Margaret which I loved so much I may have liked this even better than Tracks Another wonderful book in the Love Medicine series by Louise Erdrich I thoroughly enjoyed my read of this Four Souls dealt with culture clashes syncretism Secrets of the Lotus and strategic code switchingnd those re some of favourite themes for novels Although I did really race through Four Souls I have some hesitation rises from how this novel doesn t seem to stand up s standalone I m not sure how you could read this book nd find it rich in character development without having previously read Tracks So I recommend first reading Tracks if you re interested in picking up this series That being said I did read Tracks so I loved revisiting familiar faces Nanapush Margaret Fleur Seeing where they re further down the path of life How they have changed since the loss of their land Fleur was definitely compelling character in Four Souls but I missed her true perspective I felt we were seeing her ctions through the eyes of Pursuit another for the majority of the novel I wanted to be inside her headnd understand her motivations nd nxieties nd I missed that intimate character study However the portions of the novel narrated by Nanapush were even witty nd sly than his portion in Tracks He had me laughing out loud Chariot on the Mountain as his craftiness unfolding Ultimately whether or not this stands on its own two feet without Tracks it was enjoyable for mend I m so glad I started reading this series Four Souls picks up where Tracks leaves off nd with Fleur Pillager heading to take her revenge on the man Mauser who stole her land I enjoy good revenge story nd especially one that isn t exactly straightforward I was so happy to have Nanapush back s narrator Back on Top and getting to hear what he was up tos wellWe re lso introduced to Polly Elizabeth The Silence of the Chihuahuas as narrator the sister in law of Mauser who is great contrast to Nanapush Reading this together with Tracks is such great nd fulfilling experience Both can easily be stand lones but together re lso perfect pair Definitely stories I would love to revisit. Taking possession of their ncestral lands What promises to be straightforward tale of revenge however slowly metamorphoses into complex evocation of human nature The story of nger nd retribution that begins in Tracks becomes Final Seconds a story of healingnd love in Four Sou.
